Welcome to the second installment of Write Awake: Inspiration from The Elements, a 4-part conscious writing series.
When I was a child, I would spend hours on the swings, pumping higher and higher until I believed I could fly. In my imagination, I could touch the stars. I was free—I was Supergirl!
Take a deep breath of fresh Air and play the "what if?" game with me:
What if you stopped second-guessing yourself and just wrote something?
What if you ignored the reviews and algorithms and wrote what brings you joy?
What if you wrote the ending first?
What if her fairy dress was made from sticky sap and tree bark?
What if his house floats over a sea of dark chocolate?
What if you could untangle your old Slinky and play with it for hours on the tallest spiral staircase?
Okay, those last "what ifs?" were just for fun. But my point is that Air isn’t merely an element of imagination. It encourages you to trust your intuition, your Higher Self that tells you to "go for it," no matter how ridiculous a thought might seem.
For instance, if I had never followed my intuition to visit Newport, Rhode Island in 1990, I wouldn’t have known how beautiful it is. I wouldn’t have returned afterward with the intention of finding a job. I wouldn’t have become a newspaper editor, written books, launched a writers organization or met my yacht captain husband, etc.
If I had never listened to my inner guidance, I might not have written my first visionary fiction novel, Inn Lak’ech. I had just learned about the Mayan expression, "In lak’ech," which means "I am another yourself." That’s when all the bells and whistles went off and I got the "vision" to write about a waystation for soul families.
The nudging wouldn't quit and I'm glad it didn't because I eventually set out on a fantastical adventure of color, crystals, sea magic, mother-daughter relationships, grief, angels, fairies, mermaids, and dragons.
The message of Air is to free your imagination and go higher! You are a word magician, so if you are suddenly inspired to create a character who swings themselves up to Arcturus, don't question your sanity. Simply imagine, believe, and write about it!
Exercises:
How have you used your intuition to write better stories?
Write a "what if?" list for your current writing project and see where it takes you.
Write about a time when you let your imagination run wild!
